Introduction

The American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) are a series of examinations and curriculum materials that build problem-solving skills and mathematical knowledge in middle and high school students, ultimately determining the US team for the International Math Olympiad. In addition, students gain the opportunity to learn and achieve through competition with students in their school and around the world. Today, the competition has grown to over 300,000 students worldwide participating annually.

The MAA’s American Mathematics Competitions program leads the nation in strengthening the mathematical capabilities of the next generation of problem-solvers. Through classroom resources and friendly competition, the MAA AMC program helps America’s educators identify talent and foster a love of mathematics. The MAA AMC program positively impacts the analytical skills needed for future careers in an innovative society.

The series of American mathematics competitions include AMC8, AMC 10, AMC12, AIME and USA(J)MO. AMC8 is mainly for junior high school students and primary school students. AMC10/12 is mainly for high school students. AIME is for students who have achieved excellent results in AMC10/12, and it is the selection competition of USA(J)MO.

Qualifying System

  • International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is held once a year, which is hosted by participating countries in turn and plays an important role in promoting the exchange and development of mathematics education in various countries. Outstanding persons from USA(J)MO entered the MOSP of Mathematical Olympiad Summer Camp and then produced the American team to participate in IMO.

  • United States of America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) and United States of America Junior Mathematical Olympiad (USAJMO): AMC’s top invitational competition for high scoring AIME participants. The USAMO is restricted by invitation to students attending school in the United States or Canada and citizens of the United States living abroad.

  • American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME): AMC’s invitational competition for high scoring AMC 10/12 participants. Students may take the AIME after qualification by being in the (approximately) top 2.5% of scorers on the AMC 10 and the (approximately) top 5% of scorers on the AMC 12.

  • American Mathematics Competition 10/12 (AMC 10/12): AMC’s high school level competition.

  • American Mathematics Competition 8 (AMC 8): AMC’s middle school level competition.
